Part of any travel adventure is meeting new people, as well as the things you see along the way. Despite that, it’s not always easy to strike up a conversation with someone you don’t know, because let’s face it, there are many a serial killer out there, and our mothers always taught us never to speak to strangers!
We can’t judge everyone by weirdo standards, so it’s a good idea to try and speak to as many new people as possible. You never know, you might meet a new best friend, or the love of your life!
If you’re shy, it’s all too easy to avoid speaking to people you don’t know, but that’s not going to make you any new friends. The best way to appear confident, even when you’re feeling anything but, is to make eye contact with people, and that way they may make the first step and talk to you, rather than you having to do the hard work first.
Fake it! If you fake it for long enough you’ll eventually feel the confidence you’re trying to pretend you have, when you’re feeling more scared than anything else. Remember, the other person might be just as shy as you, or just as worried about talking first – someone has to speak first.
Join organised groups/tours
Organised tours are a good way to see more, because you will probably have a tour guide to give you important information, but they are always a great way to meet likeminded people on the road, with similar interests.
Stay in hostels with shared kitchens etc
Standing around making a cup of coffee is the perfect chance to strike up a conversation!
Look for people sat alone
If you’re in a restaurant and you notice someone at the table next to you is also alone, why not make an idle comment about the food? You might find that the conversation continues until you have a dinner companion.
Making friends and meeting new people on the road is basically down to taking a chance and being open and friendly, without judging anyone based on first impressions or appearances. You might not feel comfortable talking to someone you’ve never met, but a simple comment about the weather is all it takes, and if it doesn’t work, so what? Move on to the next person and try again.
